The Good, The Bad & The Difference: How to Talk with Children About Values
The Good, The Bad and The Difference provides a structure for measuring right and wrong, good, better and best and what to do and what not to do. The book is divided into four sections. Part I presents skills for having conversations, how to reason morally and presents the Moral Measures, a structure to evaluate the moral content of an action or belief or consequence. Part II discusses four ethical principles: Autonomy, Beneficence, Justice and Sanctity of Life. Part III presents seven virtues which I call the Seven C’s: Character, Choices, Compassion, Competence, Conscience, Consequences and Courage. Part IV contains in-depth discussions about and analysis of three topics and concludes with a chapter about parents’ moral stature in the home and parents’ need to maintain a competitive advantage in educating and influencing their children.
The book was forged on the anvil of a bit of a medical miracle: a surgical procedure which removed my infected aortic heart valve and replaced it with a mechanical artificial one. Within days after the surgery, I felt a sense of what I called a cosmic debt, a sense of gratitude to the many unknown and known people whose labor and vision and dedication made possible the Saint Jude aortic valve that now keeps me alive and my successful surgical procedure and recovery. This book is my gesture to repay this cosmic debt by mentoring, teaching and motivating parents, again, all adults, to guide children toward a more virtuous and honorable life.
