The Honorable Hunter Instructor Training Manual
is for any teacher, instructor, family member or writer that interacts with hunter education students, young hunters and people who use firearms. The book’s main theme is that educating and cultivating virtuous and strong character is the best method for defending and promoting hunting. The Honorable Hunter concept embodies more than being an ethical or skilled hunter or a fan of hunting. The Honorable Hunter possesses the mental, physical, and ethical traits that breathe life and vitality into hunting and the promotion of hunting. The Honorable Hunter possesses the skill and the will to defend and promote hunting based upon the morality of the consequences of hunting. Cultivating links between hunting and stronger moral character offers the highest probability of success for sustaining hunting.

The book is divided into two sections:

The Internal Section defines honor and ethics and illustrates arguments, anecdotes, analysis, and skills to help teachers cultivate ethics, confidence and competence in young hunters.

The External Section guides the instructor to engage with, and teach young hunters to engage with, the non-hunting community and to articulate the virtues of hunting, increase public support for hunting and to refute unjustified anti-hunting attacks. The skillful use of rhetoric and how to craft persuasive ethical arguments based on facts and consequences learned as an attorney and lecturer enrich this material.

The Good, The Bad & The Difference: How to Talk with Children About Values

The Good, The Bad and The Difference: How to Talk with Children About Values offers a structure and content for helping parents, indeed, any person, talk to young children about good and bad, right and wrong, courage and cowardice, honor and dishonor and other serious matters. The book teaches the skills to talk with children and develop a culture of conversation within the family. The book provides dozens of examples of children verbalizing their thoughts and values as they think through moral dilemmas and problems that raise moral considerations. With this guide, parents will no longer avoid, hesitate or fear taking with their children about these important topics. The conversations can be fun, humorous and lead to joyous exchanges of arguments and ideas.

The Good, The Bad and The Difference
provides a structure for measuring right and wrong, good, better and best and what to do and what not to do. The book is divided into four sections. Part I presents skills for having conversations, how to reason morally and presents the Moral Measures, a structure to evaluate the moral content of an action or belief or consequence. Part II discusses four ethical principles: Autonomy, Beneficence, Justice and Sanctity of Life. Part III presents seven virtues which I call the Seven Cs: Character, Choices, Compassion, Competence, Conscience, Consequences and Courage. Part IV contains in-depth discussions about and analysis of three topics and concludes with a chapter about parents’ moral stature in the home and parents’ need to maintain a competitive advantage in educating and influencing their children.

The book was forged on the anvil of a bit of a medical miracle: a surgical procedure which removed my infected aortic heart valve and replaced it with a mechanical artificial one. Within days after the surgery, I felt a sense of what I called a cosmic debt, a sense of gratitude to the many unknown and known people whose labor and vision and dedication made possible the Saint Jude aortic valve that now keeps me alive and my successful surgical procedure and recovery. This book is my gesture to repay this cosmic debt by mentoring, teaching and motivating parents, again, all adults, to guide children toward a more virtuous and honorable life.
